ANNAPURNA DIARY
ANNAPURNA TAPE DIARY
ANNAPURNA TAPES

The publication of diaries in written form is an old practice.
We would like these tapes to be regarded as a published diary. Vera
intended to use them as the basis for a book, but we don't know
what exact form this book would have had. In particular, we don't
know to what extent it would have concentrated on the Annapurna
expedition and to what extent it would have been an autobiography of
Vera's interesting life.

The tapes are "published" complete and unedited. Some of it
is quite critical of the expedition and other people on it. Almost
certainly Vera would have removed much of the material, because she
was very kind hearted and also because her considered judgment would
differ from her spontaneous remarks. Remember also that fatigue
and high altitude affect people's thoughts.

We have chosen not to cut even though there is much repetition.
Vera's voice is pleasant to hear, even when she is saying something
she has said before, and the uncut tapes are a better expression of
life at high altitude. Moreover, cuts would have required interposing
our own judgment on what was most significant of her experience.
